The idea was to play a bit with lights, colours and shapes to create a sort of playful, very basic do-it-yourself imaginary landscapes. The stillness of the ball and its reflection also add a surreal factor to the scene, since with that apparent angle, the ball should be rolling fast, and yet it’s still. Shortly, this shot is basically a very naive optical illusion which anyway I happened to find ironical and somehow unsettling at the same time, and anyway representative enough of this historical moment we’re all facing. “Sunrise” and “Sunset” are based on the same initial concept, to create a simple, iconic imaginary landscape with a few items and the same surreal and “domestic” twist. In this case the scene represented are stereotypical, holiday-like sunset and sunrise landscapes (something many of us living in towns or suburbs can’t quite access at the moment).
