Founded in 2017, OPEN DOORS GALLERY is a nomadic platform for emerging contemporary photographic artists. We give the best new talent from around the world the opportunity to reach new audiences, collaborating with a diverse and dynamic range of artists.
Alongside representing several award-winning artists, Open Doors is committed to making art accessible, affordable, and attainable. We want to challenge what people believe photographic art to be, while respecting the more traditional methods that shaped the medium.
Our goal is to show art lovers that photography is a compelling medium to explore and collect. As a relatively young art form compared with painting or sculpture, photography has a singular ability to absorb new technologies, an evolution many other mediums struggle to match. We hold deep respect for traditional practices such as darkroom printing and street photography, and we are equally drawn to the innovation happening at the edges of the medium, where artists blur the boundaries between disciplines and find new ways to work.
Open Doors began as a mixed media gallery, using a programme of open submission exhibitions to encourage community cohesion and local pride. Popping up in venues across London, we invited local artists to reflect their area in their own style. These events revealed a deep pool of emerging talent that was significantly under-represented, photography especially.
Coming from a photographic background ourselves, we chose to focus on finding and developing the best of it. Through the OD Photo Prize, now in its sixth edition, we champion emerging photographers and introduce their work to a growing international audience. We want to lead and empower a growing community of first-time buyers with highly collectable prints and unique work, rich in story and aesthetic quality.
Online, Open Doors has built a strong presence through @odtakeovers, where we showcase a wide variety of styles from beyond our represented artists, broadening people’s understanding of the medium and continuing our devotion to emerging photographers generally. @odprintsales is home to available works and editions.
While the digital side matters, we believe wholeheartedly in the value of experiencing these works up close, through the exhibitions and art fairs we take part in throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming you to an event soon.
