Description

Hannah Blackmore is a British photographer living in South East London. Her work explores the identity of individuals and communities, examining how we present ourselves, the ties that bring us together, and the impressions we leave behind.

Hannah grew up in Thanet, and it is the unique characters and quirks of life there that led to a keen interest in studying communities and people. This interest has continued throughout her work. Hannah’s photographs create complex portraits of people and place, which allow the viewer to feel fully immersed in others lives, providing an opportunity to reflect.

SERIES INFO

VACANT

Vacant is a series of photographs of empty, closed down and abandoned shop fronts from Hannah’s home towns of Margate, Ramsgate and Cliftonville. The images were taken in 2011, just before Margate and the surrounding areas recent regeneration began to take off. The project captures a moment in time, from the areas long history of rises and falls in fortune.

When Hannah began the project, she took the photos to create an honest record of how the streets and shops of her hometown were faring. At the time it felt like they were capturing an endpoint, instead they have gone on to depict a transitional period, with one era coming to an end so another could begin.

The series is currently being displayed as part of the Turner Contemporary Margate’s first photographic exhibition to date: Seaside: Photographed. It will then go on national tour throughout 2019 – 2020.
