Denisse Ariana Pérez is a Caribbean-born, Barcelona-based copywriter and photographer. Her work focuses on people, nature, gender, culture, and words and how they all interact with one another.
“I keep coming back to water scenes. I keep coming back to rivers and lakes. I keep coming back to oceans. I like to explore the interaction of people with water. Water can disarm even the most armed of facades. Becoming one with water is not about rushing but rather about flowing. And flowing is the closest thing to being.
This large ongoing body of work has taken me through different corners of the world on an aquatic pilgrimage, from the cold waters of Scandinavia to the pink rivers of Senegal. In these versatile waters, I have captured men, women, siblings, people living with albinism, and non-binary beings. Disarming and dismantling traditional notions of masculinity, facades of masculinity, is something I am devoted to. Through my images, I aim to showcase people through a more sensible and sensitive lens, one that shows nuance, vulnerability, and movement.

Driven by an obsession with humans and the human experience as a whole, Denisse Ariana Pérez work looks to explore, expose and honour the beauty she sees in others. Water allows her to get closer to her subjects by dissolving facades and removing walls to celebrate what is found within. From the colder currents of Scandinavia to the warm pink lakes of Senegal, Agua is an intimate and endless journey of human exploration that captures a vital and magical relationship between people and water.
Denisse Ariana Pérez’ first monograph, Agua [published by Guest Editions], has proven hugely popular and is now into it’s second edition. Her work has also been exhibited around the world. Most notably Fotografiska Museum in New York, Berlin, and Stockholm, In Cadaques Festival in Spain, Foto Europea in Italy, and Photo London art fair.
