OD Photo Prize 2023 | Shortlisted Artist

Fion Hung Ching Yan [b. 1993] works primarily in staged photography and photo collage, presenting them in the forms of installation and books. Her photography practice challenges the nature of humanity, traditional stereotypes, and our contemporary understanding of intergenerational trauma inspired by her family’s conflicts. Hung is a visual artist, a researcher, and an art educator. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hon) in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2016 and completed a master’s degree in Photography from the London College of Communication, UAL in 2023.

Artist Statement | “As a Hong Konger, my identity has been shaped by Chinese family traditions and moral standards inherited from the former generations. A key aspect of my art practice has been to explore my self-identity through a Western perspective.

In 2016, I experienced the trauma of my grandma’s passing. I began to question my role and the issue of gender in family relationships. 24 Paragons of Filial Piety 二十四孝 – a series of Yuan dynasty Chinese folktales concerning acts of loyalty performed by the children for their parents, provided the visual metaphors for my project. In this work, I perform different bodily gestures and seemingly ‘inappropriate’ acts to push against the institution of the ideal Chinese family. I put my naked body in front of the camera in a subversive attempt to discover my gendered identity. Using the aesthetics of camp in these photo collages, the project aims to create a subversive fantasy that would never be possible in real life.” – Fion Hung Ching Yan
