Sander Coers

Sander Coers [b. 1997] is an artist working with photography based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, whose work balances the borders of documentary and fiction. With a tender gaze, he seeks to establish new perspectives on masculinity by visualising, revisiting, and (de)constructing memories in melancholic and highly romanticised worlds that possess a cinematic quality. With the coming-of-age theme recurring throughout his work, he reflects on stories of love, friendship, and self-acceptance drawn from his family, friends, and peers. Coers’ visual language is deeply inspired by nostalgic memories of his youth in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, infusing vivid hues and profound emotions into his portraits, stills, and landscapes, creating dream-like and melancholic worlds.

Sander’s hugely successful series POST explores the intersection of constructed memories and perceptions of masculinity in visual culture through the use of AI-generated imagery. With this project, I aim to investigate the role of photography in shaping our perceptions of the past and question its authenticity in the age of digitalism where memories can be constructed and manipulated.
With each new body of work, Sander Coers pushes further into the emotional terrain of memory and identity. Eulogy marks his most ambitious project to date — a multi-chapter, multimedia exploration of intergenerational and postcolonial trauma, rooted in his family’s archive. Blending photography, ceramics, weaving, and machine learning, Coers transforms personal relics into vessels of collective memory, revealing how the echoes of the past continue to shape the emotional and cultural landscapes of the present.
Sander Coers graduated with Honours in Fine Art from the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam in 2021. He self-published his graduation project Come Home, which was selected for multiple prizes. Since then, he has published two more books: This Naked Incident and Blue Mood (Al Mar). His work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums in The Netherlands and abroad and his work has been acquired by the Preus Museum, Rabobank, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sander was selected as a Rising Star of 2022 by the Dutch newspaper NRC and is part of the Foam Talent program in 2024-2025.
