Open Doors Gallery are delighted to reveal the latest series from the award winning photographic artist, Laura Pannack. Prints from this new series, The Journey Home, have already been shortlisted for the AOP Award and also for the prestigious Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, 2024. As well as being announced amongst the winners of Sony World Photography Organisation awardee’s, 2025.
Through a collaborative approach that embraces analogue photography, shared film cameras, and intimate poetic expression, Pannack invited young people from across the community to contribute their narrative. The result is a raw, evocative portrait of adolescence shaped by danger, resilience, and grace.

“This project explores the tumultuous public life of adolescents in the gang governed Cape Flats area of Cape Town, South Africa. A country with the greatest social divide in the world.
Young people anxiously tread dirt and asphalt, considering invisible boundaries which bring the very real and consistent threat of death by crossfire.
Rather than solely documenting their experiences we share film cameras, explore low fi analogue techniques and manifest poetry. This collaborative approach produces material which offer a rare insight into their confusing and challenging world of adolescence.”
