Selected by Rica Cerbarano

“Gregory Eddi Jones’ work is capable of addressing an ultra-contemporary issue, the progression of AI, without falling into cliché—both in terms of aesthetics and content. He encourages us to look at it as connected to the evolution of the medium, building a bridge between past and present with clarity and consistency.” — Rica Cerbarano
Gregory Eddi Jones (b. 1986, Syracuse, NY) is a post-photographic artist, writer, and publisher, based between Philadelphia and New York. Jones’ work is grounded in methods of appropriation and the re-authorship of existing photographic, literary, and aesthetic traditions. His practice often engages with visual criticism, dark humor, cultural commentary, and building conversant bridges between past and present cultural, political, and technological conditions.
Image Description| Digital collage that derives from scans of vintage photography magazine pages and AI-generated images that used the content of the pages as prompts.
Artist Statement | “49/23 is a body of work that looks to reconcile photography’s historical contexts with the reckoning the medium faces now in the age of AI. The magazine pages are sourced from vintage issues of Popular Photography Magazine from the mid-20th century, and the images and texts of those pages are used as prompts to produce the AI-made images that are collaged atop of them.
Bridging the past and future of photographic production, I hope the work spurs important conversations on the evolution of the medium, and perhaps even a mourning for traditions that are becoming lost within the march of technological progress.
The title of the project serves as a time stamp of the origin date of each set of material, and marks the year in which publicly available AI tools began to proliferate. “ — Gregory Eddi Jones
