Maria Lax is a London based photographer originally from a small town in Northern Finland. She is known for her use of colour and experimental camera techniques.
Enduring the extreme cold of the remote areas of Northern Finland, recently Maria has been returning to a forest of giant trees slumbering beneath a thick blanket of snow. A naturally occurring phenomena in the Arctic Circle where trees are caked with heavy snow. At times resembling cotton candy, she has filled the landscape by her signature use of colour and long exposures. Inspired by ‘revontulet’ or ‘fox fires’ which is the term for Northern Lights in Finland, the results have been these psychedelic landscapes. This series is ongoing so please keep an eye out for new releases over time.
Many of the works below are one off experiments from unfinished series. Highlighting Maria’s ambitious attempts to push the boundaries of endurance, technique and the medium as a whole.
