Non-Technological Devices
CHLOÉ AZZOPARDI
_
In Non-Technological Devices, Chloé Azzopardi constructs a quietly radical vision of the future—one not driven by technological dominance, but by a poetic, speculative ecology. Through a series of hand-made, analogue artefacts crafted from found natural materials, she imagines alternative ways of cohabiting with the living world. These hybrid tools—part sculpture, part prosthetic—stand in for the devices that saturate our hyper-artificial present, offering instead a new iconography of ecological self-defense. With dreamlike tenderness and subtle urgency, Azzopardi’s photographs invite us to reimagine our relationship with technology, nature, and ourselves—not through dystopian despair or utopian idealism, but through playful, embodied acts of resistance and repair.
The ‘non-technological devices’ are composite tools, assembled from found natural elements to mimic the technological devices that populate our daily lives. Straddling the line between rudimentary creations and science-fiction objects, these tools function both as extensions of the body and as obstacles. In combination with invented artifacts, they form a fictional universe that acts as a mirror to our fantasies of the future.
“There is a poetry to this work. Filled with natural light and soft tones, the subjects in these portraits interact with primordial devices. Chloé’s photographs are delicate, and peacefullyplayful. The subjects’ interaction with their respective artefacts take place in a natural environment; their eyes gently closed (with one significant exception). Seemingly accepting their vulnerability, the models remain still and trusting in the tenderness of their quiet gestures; as carefree as children.”

With this project, Chloé Azzopardi seeks to generate new desires—images that serve as resources for our collective imagination. How can we depict an alternative future, one that challenges our dreams of a hyper-artificial world driven by the relentless pursuit of technological progress?
Trying to move beyond the naïve optimisms of a return to the earth and technological solutionism, the artist looks for narratives that could help us to combat our political discouragement and enable us to take action in the face of environmental destruction. Using fiction and play, she thinks of other ways of imagining augmented lives, creating organic cyborgs whose aim would be to inscribe the body differently in the environment. She uses the poetic diversion of artefacts that are symbols of technical progress to question our relationship with the living, the disappearance of the earthly resources used to build the components of our technological objects and extractivism.
