“I am a memory researcher. My work exists within the authenticity and the ambiguity of historical memory through different aesthetic exercises such as photography and video. I distance myself from the original document to turn it into a new artistic construct, a new historical memory. My work is anchored in a documentary base and I start from there to delve into those rescued stories. I remove the dust from the memories of archives that I find to articulate new constructions from the fragments of memories. Thus, I build a new story, more in tune with individual X than with the mega-stories of Cuban history.
I am interested in assembling the memories of the common individual. That anonymous character from whom the historical archive often starts which I then dust off and intervene. Indeed, I am a researcher of memories, and I use them to build a multidisciplinary metaphor. It all starts from that historical memory perpetuated in the photographic archive to explore all possible levels of representation and concept: I experiment with video, I look for new essences in photography, I work from historical poetics with the memory of the archive.”
