Artefacts looks at the artefact itself. It is not treated as a stable object recovered from history, but as something far less certain: a fragment, a trace, a distortion, the residue of a human desire to know and to measure. Conventionally, an artefact is an object shaped by human hands and carrying cultural meaning. In photography it is also the opposite: an unwanted mark, a glitch, a shift away from clarity. The artists work in the space between these two meanings.

Since 2016, Magdalena Wysocka and Claudio Pogo have drawn on found imagery from scientific journals, forgotten books, manuals and archival photographs. These images were once made to pass on knowledge. In Artefacts they return as relics. Taken out of their original contexts, they stop instructing and become enigmatic: bodies are fragmented, and plants, stones and caves read as parts of man-made models, measured and mapped according to a private logic.

Each work is unique. The duo use a risograph, a machine built for speed and mass production, and work against its logic. They print layer by layer onto raw canvas and allow misregistrations, smudges and pressure marks to become part of the finished piece. The new works shown in Paris extend this process while keeping the series’ central idea: every photograph is already a fragment of time.
